Visually, the game is stunning! It’s a far cry from the previous iteration which didn’t really have too many details to emphasize as the game was isometric. However this time around, you get to appreciate not only your personal Helldiver but also all of the hostile enemies that are out to get you.

You'll still have a good time if you decide to live out your space marine fantasy all by your lonesome, but we definitely recommend giving multiplayer a chance.

The game improved on a lot of things that I personally had gripes with the previous game. There are some crashes here and there regarding the in-game Armory and some concerns with the anti-cheat that the game uses, but if you look past those cons, I don’t think there’s too many negatives to write about.

Helldivers 2 takes place a century after the events of the first game, with Super Earth having emerged victorious against its adversaries – the deadly, bug-like Terminids, the grotesque Cyborgs and the inscrutable Illuminates.

As it is now, it is an entertaining action spectacle that is definitely best when played with others. Despite the repetitiveness, I have had a lot of fun with it and I look forward to diving into new planets to save humanity.

Also, some players are experiencing crashes when trying to join a lobby either via Quickplay or via private lobbies. To add to this, people are criticizing the game for its use of the anti-cheat software, nProtect Gameguard, which may put you off.

Fun game, but the crashes, disconnects, and server issues every 30 min make it hard to have a fun time. Finding a group to play with is a pain and always says the group is full. Fix a few issues and this game will be top notch

With pelo story mode or alternate game modes, I’m curious how much there will be for players to do beyond grinding the same missions ad nauseum, especially with pelo clear content roadmap laid out as of yet. That said, with only two enemy factions at the moment, it seems likely the third one from the original Helldivers could be Helldivers 2 Gameplay added into the mix at some point, which could easily keep the good times rolling.

When selecting stratagems, it’ll be essential to coordinate with your team to select the best possible load-outs for the enemies and mission type. Playing with strangers can be troublesome, but teamwork is key in Helldivers. Put on a headset and try to communicate with your teammates. You may be surprised at how friendly others can be in the game.

Those small details contrast against the environment especially nicely because of the game's use of relatively high-resolution shadowmaps. Other elements of the lighting perhaps don't fare as well. The worlds are generally lit convincingly enough, but when you get up close you can spot some light leak in places, and shadowed regions tend to have a bit of a flat look. I'm not sure we're looking at pre-calculated, 'baked' lighting. I think instead we're seeing the typical mix of screen-space ambient occlusion and shadowmaps to shade in some of those finer details, which works well for the big picture stuff but doesn't hold up quite as well on close examination. The same can be said for reflections, which exhibit typical screen-space reflection 'skirting'. After surveying the game's graphical tech, I wasn't quite sure what we were looking at. UE4 seemed like an obvious choice, but it didn't seem well-suited for this kind of big multiplayer game with open-world environments.

Taking on the role of an elite Helldiver fighting for democracy is tough work, but there's a whole host of weapons, Stratagems, and armor types that will help you keep the peace.
